 CHAPTER 28 CDF Secret Hangar - 0330 Hours - 2 September, 2035

 

The spacecraft being utilized in Operation Lightning Strike are being prepared for departure on the mission. Paul, Ray and the CDF engineers set some kind of record in upgrading the weapons and shielding on the sixteen WA-02 Night Stalkers, five WA-01 Widow Makers and the three WA-10s from the future.

The majority of the Strike Force is in the Ready Room for the final Operational briefing with the exception of the Senior Staff, who are going over the final details of the mission.

Rick and Caroline are being secluded in their quarters until it is time to leave. They were given a through examination by Dr. John Burke. Robert was given the results of Dr. Burke’s examination and found out that Rick and Caroline weren’t affected by the Time Vortex.

Robert found out that they had their Shields on when they were thrown into the past. Dr. Burke concluded the slowing of their aging process was caused by them being exposed to the temporal flux when they disappeared during Operation Liberty Bell. He also told them that their aging process hasn’t stopped completely but slowed to 1/25 of the normal human, meaning they’ll grow one year older for every 25 years that pass on Earth . He also noticed that the descendants of the pilots have a longer than average life span most notably Amanda Tucker-Pasqualle, who died in 2159 at the age of 133 although she appeared to be only in her early 70’s.

Robert and Ray are currently in the briefing room going over the final details of the mission with the Sections Commanders. Alberto has resumed Command of Alpha Squadron, with Lieutenant Colonel John Randall taking Command of Charlie Squadron. Robert, Ricardo, Keith and Lieutenant Mike Taylor will transport the Special Forces teams. Lyle will pilot the WA-01 bringing CDF Intelligence.

Robert is overall Commander and Lyle acting as Executive Officer. He will be coordinating with Robert and their TDF/MDF counterparts when they get to the future. Ryan and Paul will be monitoring them from the Top Secret Control Room and Ryan will be the go between in the event that something happens and the Strike Force will need to be alerted to anything that occurs in the past: a Cho’Kai attack or a change in the time line caused by going into the future.

Paul and Allison are giving the latest Intelligence report. After they give their report, Robert gives the time table for the assault. He does not want to begin right away, he wants to get updated Intelligence from the TDF and MDF command along with a sit/rep [situation report] on the pilots held captive.

He also wants to coordinate a full strike with the other two 23rd Century forces after they are upgraded with the modifications made by Paul and Ray. He is reluctant to have a pre-planned course of action because it would be too risky to fight an enemy he knows little or nothing about. He concludes the briefing telling Ray to prepare the two MDF pilots to return to their own time zapping their memory and putting them into their WA-10s which Ray will tow through the Vortex . Robert and the other Commanders shake hands with Ryan and Paul then leave the briefing room to begin Operation Lightning Strike.

 

CDF Secret Hangar - 0400 hours - 2 September, 2035

 

 Robert is in the cockpit of his WA-02 going over his preflight checks. He is a little edgy about going on the mission, because since assuming Command of the unit, his flight time has been limited to a few high priority missions and the flight simulator.

Robert finishes his pre-flight checks, then takes out a picture of Jackie and his 4 children, then sets it along side of the picture of his late wife Amanda, Robert Jr. and Sarah when they were younger. He holds the chain with the heart shaped locket Jackie gave him then asks her Spirit to watch over him even though she is very much alive and wouldn’t be surprised to see her almost 200 years from now.

“Wish me luck, Babe” Robert says as he puts the good luck charm from his wife into the pocket of his flight suit. He sets his personal feelings aside, becoming all business and ready to 'Open a can of whup ass' on the Cho’Kai.

He radios the CDF Tower and says “CDF 1 to tower .. I’m a go for launch.”

 “Roger CDF 1” the Tower Controller replies.

“CDF 1 to Section Leaders, status report.”

The section leaders report their status. Dave reports that Special Forces are ready by saying “Just point us at something .. and we’ll kill it.”

Robert chuckles and says “Keep the dogs on a leash until we find them some fresh meat.”

“You better hurry. The dogs haven’t eaten, and the pilot’s looking mighty tasty.” This gets an immediate request from the pilot carrying Dave’s Special Forces team for a transfer.

Robert laughs then assures the pilot, Lieutenant Taylor that “You’ll be safe as long as you keep the cockpit locked; and don’t present any body parts to the Team inside.”

This is followed by unearthly howls from Dave and the entire Special Forces Unit which scares the hell out of the poor pilot and nearly everyone else in the Strike Force.

 Robert laughs, then orders Dave to muzzle the members of his Unit after which he radios the Tower and says “CDF One to tower .. Operation Lightning Strike ready to commence.”

“Roger CDF One. You are go for launch.”

“Roger Tower. CDF One to all Units .engage your Shields and let’s …”

“Kick some ass!” the rest of the Strike Force replies.

The Special Forces teams yell “Fuck that, let’s kill something!” The strike force let out a Rebel Yell and the Special Forces Howl as Robert activates the Vortex Activator then one by one the CDF Strike Force disappears into the Vortex and drawn into the future.
